10 Tips for Caring for Someone with Dementia

These tips can make all the difference in helping both the caregiver and the person with dementia during this very difficult disease. They seem obvious but they are easy to forget when you are in the moment.

1. Arguments are useless. In fact, they often make matters worse.

2. A brain not functioning correctly can make a person become irrational in their thinking. You can not be rational with someone who has become irrational. Reasoning does not work.

3. Allow as much freedom and independence as possible. It is instinctual to push back if you feel you are being restricted. Say yes as often as you can.

4. Assume that the person with dementia understands and hears what you say. Do not talk about them in front of them.

5. A person with dementia senses your attitude even if they can not understand your words. Frustration and irritation can be contagious. Stay calm and be kind.

6. Dementia is a disease just like heart disease. The person with dementia is not trying to be difficult. Their brain is failing, and they are often trying to hang on to bare threads of themselves. Be compassionate to their fear and loss.

7. A good sense of humor will go a long way.

8. Routine is good. A healthy diet, adequate fluids, daily exercise, and fresh air and sunlight will help with stability.

9. Appreciate good moments or good days.

10. Do not try to care for a person with dementia alone. This is not a one-person job. Hire help and continue to participate in your activities and friendships.
